Differences between GST and HST

The GST is a federal tax of 5% applied to most goods and services in Canada. Some provinces have combined the GST with their provincial sales tax to create the HST. The HST rate varies depending on the province. Some items, like basic groceries and certain medical services, are exempt from GST/HST.
